Describe a recent relationship conflict that felt familiar. What emotions came up for you?

When my partner didn't respond to my text for hours, I immediately felt abandoned and anxious. I started overthinking everything, wondering if they were upset with me or losing interest.

I noticed myself getting increasingly anxious and then eventually shutting down emotionally to protect myself. When they finally called, I was cold and distant even though I had been desperate to talk earlier.

This pattern feels so familiar - I crave connection but then push people away when I feel vulnerable. It reminds me of how I felt as a child when my mom would be emotionally unavailable.

Anxious-Avoidant Loop

You move between anxious attachment (craving connection) and avoidant behavior (emotional withdrawal) when feeling vulnerable.

Childhood Connection

This echoes the feelings you described from childhood, when your mom was emotionally unavailable and you were left craving closeness.

Action Plan

The next time you notice yourself slipping into withdrawal:

  1. Pause & Sense – Sit or stand with feet flat, eyes soft.
  2. Vagus Breath – Inhale through the nose 4 counts, exhale with a gentle sigh 8 counts. Feel the belly drop.
  3. Pendulation Scan – Like Peter Levine's practice, gently move attention between a tense area (e.g., chest) and a neutral or pleasant area (e.g., soles of the feet). Let the contrast melt the charge.
  4. Reach & Release – Extend arms outward as if seeking connection, then bring hands to heart. Notice the shift from seeking to self‑soothing.

Repeat for 2–3 minutes until your body registers more ease (slower pulse, softer shoulders) before re‑engaging with your partner.
